Darlings, meet Jordan - a passionate writer, dream chaser, yoga junkie, and the founder of TBV Apparel. We are so inspired by how she has started her own clothing line, written her own book, and successfully run her own business all by the age of 23.
Q: Give us your best "15 second elevator pitch" on who you are!
A: Hi loves! My name is Jordan Younger and I am a lifestyle and wellness blogger living in sunny Los Angeles (most of the time at least, when I'm not romping around my second home of NYC). When people ask me to describe my blog I always laugh out loud, because the best way to describe it is an online diary. It's geared toward wellness, but wellness is more of a lifestyle in my book so the blog encompasses nearly every aspect of my life. So yes, I write an online diary for a living! I also have a clothing line, a book (releases on Nov 15! WOO!), a kitten and an extreme passion for yoga/running. You could say I wear a lot of hats... And I don't allow myself to get bored. Ever.
Q: Where did the idea for Balanced Blonde/TBV Apparel come from?
A: Well, I started my blog in 2013 as a vegan food blog, believe it or not! As my own lifestyle evolved, my blog and brand ended up changing along with it. I went through a very public transition from veganism to a diet/lifestyle that incorporates more variety and focuses on living label-free, good vibes and balance. As the blog shifted, TBV Apparel also shifted. The initial idea for TBV Apparel came to me in the middle of a yoga class a couple of years ago. I thought of a bunch of phrases for graphic tees and envisioned a super fun line to sell on the blog and even nailed down all the details of the first photo shoot WHILE in that yoga class and before the line had even begun to come to fruition. Luckily one of my dear friends from college is a phenomenal designer and already had experience in the t-shirt printing business, so we linked up-- and now TV Apparel is our THING! It's pretty much our baby. It's evolved a lot, and incorporates all sorts of phrases now that don't just have to do with wellness/yoga where we began, which I think is very cool. There are three of us who work on the line nearly full-time, and I feel so lucky to have them growing it with me-- working with a team that you love and trust is beyond important, and I think that's a big reason as to why we've grown the way that we have.
Q: Your company encourages women to stay balanced & true to themselves! What is your #1 advice for small businesses when it comes to staying true to your brand?
A: YEP, you got that right! Well, as I sort of said above, surround yourself with people who INSPIRE YOU, believe in you, make you want to be better, have strengths where you have weaknesses, and whom you trust wholeheartedly. It takes a village to build something worthwhile and wonderful... even if that "village" consists of a very small handful of people. You have to see outside of yourself and look at the brand/business as a longterm thing. Be willing to accept that you're not always right, and also accept evolvement and growth as a good thing rather than as the big, scary unknown. If you are pursuing something you are very passionate about, the rest will fall into place-- it all begins with the passion. If the passion is not there, walk away and do something else. (I'm serious.)
Q: You're attending a party/event. What small details do you seem to notice first?
A: Oh man, I am a hyper-observant person so this is a funny question. I always notice the crowd first-- the people, their interactions, the vibe. I soak in the vibe immediately and if it feels a little off I try to make the energy more positive, at least in the immediate space surrounding me. I also usually notice the food, because I am so into the wellness side of things and I always hope there is something healthy there for me to munch on!
Q: Best advice you've received and why it stuck with you for so long.
A: FOLLOW YOUR HEART. If you are pursuing something you love, you will find success. That is my mantra and it's the foundation I've built my company upon, so it has definitely stuck with me.
Q: What is one goal you want to accomplish before you're 30?
A: Get on the NY Times best-seller list, for sure. Cross your fingers for this book!!! Hopefully there will be lots more books, too. And just continue to inspire people and build my brand and be HAPPY and be surrounded by inspiring individuals.
Q: What is something you wish you knew before you started your own business?
A: A LOT, lol. Mainly the importance of contracts in the context of working with brands, and also to plan ahead as much as possible because the bigger a business gets, the more impossible it gets to be last minute about things. I'm a pretty last minute / spontaneous person, so this has been a learning curve for me.
Coffee or tea? Soul Cycle or Pure Barre? Strawberries or Bananas? Yoga Pants or Running Shorts? COFFEE (Cold brew). Soul Cycle. Bananas (obsessed). Yoga pants (every day).
